UPAWS has recently hired a new shelter manager to continue the progress that has been made. Ryan Poupore, new to the field of animal sheltering and welfare, has chosen to follow a life-long passion to work in the non-profit sector and to take an active role in serving as a voice for the animals. Whether it be providing for their basic needs, protecting them from neglect and cruelty, or countering breed discrimination, he is committed to making a positive impact in the lives of as many animals as he can.
Ryan attended Northern Michigan University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Criminal Justice and minor in Political Science and then went on to earn his Masters in Public Administration. He also attended the Federal Law Enforcement Training Academy and the James J. Rowley Training Center, earning academic achievement awards. At the Emergency Management Institute he earned nine emergency management certificates from FEMA.
Professionally, Ryan’s experiences have ranged from working as a summer employee with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, to standing guard on the steps the the White House for United States Secret Service, to serving as a Logistics Supervisor for Northern Michigan University. Ryan’s unique experiences and strengths make him the ideal choice to transition UPAWS to its new facility and expand its programs to go further in helping animals beyond the immediate service area.
Ryan currently resides in Ishpeming, Michigan with his wife, Kristi, two children, Ella and Evan, and two pitbulls, Rex and Tye (in photo).
